About Sue Spender
Before qualifying as a 'direct entry' midwife, I was employed as a support worker at my local maternity unit. I went on to train as an antenatal, birth and postnatal doula and maternity nurse.
I set up as an independent midwife because I wanted to practice autonomously and be able to offer women continuity of care throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. I enjoy supporting women to birth their babies safely and comfortably in the environment of their choice where I'm in a better position to provide care that is respectful, loving and compassionate.
As a midwife in 2014, I had the fortune to work in a birth centre in the Philippines where I contributed towards the provision of maternity care. The experience of working in a different culture was incredibly valuable. My interest in charity ventures has also been the inspiration behind me organising study days for midwives. These events have resulted in financial donations made to Sierra Leone for the purposes of funding midwives' training.
My specialist interests lie in waterbirth, rebozo, breech and VBAC.
I live with my husband and our younger children (one of our grown up daughters is also a midwife). Our home is in a countryside setting in which we keep a small flock of sheep and some rescued ponies. I very much enjoy the tranquillity of practicing independently in the SW of England.
