Stem cell collection service in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall
If you are considering stem cell collection, I am trained, licensed and registered with the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) to procure stem cells and cord tissue for the purposes of storage. The HTA is the Legal Competent Authority in the UK responsible for regulating the quality and safety of this specialised service. The training I undertook was through the only company licensed to provide an accredited training. This means that I am legally permitted to collect stem cells for any of the major storage laboratories. Additionally it means that I can give you impartial information, as I hold no loyalty to any particular company.
An overview: The option of stem cell collection / storage
Stem cell therapy carries the potential to treat and perhaps in the future, cure many diseases. For those who are already suffering from a disease that stem cells can treat, storing stem cells may have a personal importance and relevance. For others, it is likely that at some point in their life, they or a loved one will be affected by a disease that stem cells can treat. The potential for stem cells to replace damaged cells and tissues is unlimited. Stem cells are currently being used to successfully treat more than 80 diseases including leukemia, anaemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, other cancers and impaired immune systems.

How much does stem cell storage cost?
Costs slightly vary between companies and I recommend you carry out research independently and find the company that best suits you. There is a choice of packages I believe. Normally I receive referrals directly from the companies and I then contact the clients once they've signed up for the service. Occasionally it happens the other way round, in which case I will refer you to the 3 closest companies in order for you to then choose who you want to go with. My fee is paid by the company.
On a personal note
In the early days of stem cell collection, on rare occasions I reluctantly provided this service to clients who, prior to booking me as their midwife had decided that stem cell collection was what they wanted. In those days, different methods were used for procurement that relied on clamping the umbilical cord immediately following the birth of the baby. It has been demonstrated by numerous studies that early cord clamping (ECC) is detrimental to a baby’s immediate and long term wellbeing, whereas delayed cord clamping (DCC) is not. These days, methods of procurement have improved and it is now possible to have a DCC and a successful stem cell collection. In light of this, the offer to collect stem cells / cord tissue is available with me. Please let me know if you are interested. I cover all of Devon, Somerset and parts of Cornwall.

What are stem cells?
Stem Cells are the body’s very early unspecialised "master" cells which have 2 distinct characteristics:
- They self-renew through cell division for the duration of our life.
- They have the potential to develop into other types of cells and tissue (examples: red or white blood cells, nerve cells, cartilage and bone).
Stem cell storage: the 2 types of stem cells:
- Haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) – found in cord blood, for the treatment of blood and immune system disorders.
- Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) – found in cord tissue, adipose tissue and teeth. In the future they may be used to repair or replace damaged tissues or organs in line with ongoing scientific developments.
